Before I hear the 'get in a real league' answers, please bear with the question. I am in a league with family, we have fun with it. Previous years it has been a 10 person league, this year only a 6 person league creating unique and surprisingly fun challenges. Basically with 60 less people drafted you almost can not get completely screwed or even have some people be completely stupid, making the teams a bit less skewed than in previous years. But back to the question. I ended up picking 6th of 6 teams, which was not bad as pick 6 and 7 were Frank Gore and Willie Parker (I know, I know, none of the 'get with a real league comments' please, most of the others did not mess with lineups in the autodraft so blame Yahoo for spitting Gore out at 6). My backup is Reggie Bush. I have first claim on the waiver wire and Clinton Portis and Thomas Jones are sitting at the top of the waiver wire. I am certainly taking one of those two, if for no other reason to keep them from the others, and will try for, and likely fail, to claim both, for the same reason. I am leaning toward taking Portis with the first priority WW pick because with those backs I have above in the first three slots I certainly can take a chance at the home run, and think that his upside is bigger. I just am not sold on the whole Betts rushed for a ton and got a big contract last year thing. In my mind he is insurance, and if Portis is healthy Portis gets 80% of the carries, making him a top five back. Admittedly it is a big if on that health thing, though he supposedly is pretty healthy right now and over that tendonitis. Thomas Jones seems like the flavor of the month pick this year to me, I think a safe pick but a home run? Not so much in my mind. I would cut Jacksonville for the first WW, and if lucky and get the second WW as well, cut Hasselback for the 2nd. My thinking being in a 6 team league there are plenty of options out there to replace either of those if needed, ie, if McNabb becomes injured or if either of the main players is on a off week. But would like your thoughts. The rest of my team by the way, thoughts on that would be appreciated as well:
QB Donovan McNabb, Matt Hasselbeck WR Torry Holt, Reggie Wayne, Javon Walker, Santana Moss, Darrell Jackson RB Frank Gore, Willie Parker, Reggie Bush TE Kellen Winslow,Alge Crumpler K Neil Rackers DEF Chicago, Jacksonville |

Update:
Woke up this morning and ended up with both. I lost by backup QB in Hassleback and my back up on Defense in Jacksonville, but worth it in my book as I look at my backup TE in Alge Crumpler as my 'flex' position. He has 5 weeks before my first player, QB McNabb, has his bye to prove himself or just will use that position week in and week out to fill in byes on positions I am only one deep. It is a six team league so very shallow but I like my chances with this team: QB Donovan McNabb WR Torry Holt, Reggie Wayne, Javon Walker, Santana Moss, Darrell Jackson RB Frank Gore, Willie Parker, Reggie Bush, Clinton Portis, Thomas Jones TE Kellen Winslow, Alge Crumpler K Neil Rackers DEF Chicago Please one piece of advice. Stand pat or look to shore up any area, if possible of course. |

In such a shallow league, you should get yourself a legit backup QB considering you own McNabb. He's great while he plays, but he definitely deserves an injury-prone label if any player does. You don't need Darrell Jackson with your WR's so I'd get a nice backup soon if you can.

Actually you were mirroring my thoughts. In such a shallow league though who would trade anyone worth more than what I could pick up off the WW for Jackson? QB's currently on the WW include Hassleback who I cut, Leinart, Farve, Manning, Rothlesberger, Alex Smith, Pennington. I personally think that Rothisberger for one may have a better year than Hassleback. As for the trade, say for a Kitna, not sure if the others will do it. Or if it is that big an upgrade. Worst case if McNabb goes down I could pick up one of those on that list and I am not sure that it would be that much of a downgrade from one of the backups someone might give me for Jackson. Might. I am doubting it though as who is really hurting terribly in such a shallow league? Maybe if injuries hit I could make a WR trade for a better QB, or give up some of that RB depth, not sure in this league that I can right now though does not hurt to try. |

As long as those guys are available, then no worries. If you can swing getting a Kitna or higher, then great, but I doubt it. So you're fine and can stay put with those guys available on the WW.
