Price was a major fantasy disappointment in 2003, but in many ways it was to be expected and he should rebound nicely in 2004.
After enjoying a stellar 2002 campaign in which he caught 94 balls for 1,252 yards playing opposite Eric Moulds, Price was rewarded with a fat contract in Atlanta. As so many athletes have done before him, Price responded by taking the year off. With a year of hard lessons and media scorn behind him, Price should return with a fresh attitude and be ready to prove himself. There are plenty of tangible reasons he'll bounce back as well. Even though his stats dipped to 838 receiving yards last year, he still averaged 13.1 yards per catch, which is almost identical to what he had in Buffalo in 2002. The difference is that he caught 30 more balls that season. It sounds like a lot, but I challenge you to show me the receiver who wouldn't decline by two receptions per game going from Drew Bledsoe as their QB to having Doug Johnson and Kurt Kittner throw them the rock, It's almost a miracle his production didn't drop more with those two jokers behind center. It will be a different story this year with a healthy Micheal Vick. Price and Vick had begun to click last preseason before Vick's injury and given another offseason to build a chemistry, Price will be able to establish himself as a productive #1 WR. Price will also benefit from the addition of Micheal Jenkins. The rookie's size will make an immediate impact and he will open things up for Price much as Moulds did in Buffalo. Price may not be able to handle top cover corners as well as some other #1 WRs in the league, but this season he won't have as much pressure because defenses will have to spread themselves thin guarding against Jenkins, Crumpler, and of course the threat of Vick's mobility. The new coaching staff can only help as well. Gregg Knapp knows how to run a passing offense from his days in San Francisco and the Falcons will be much more dangerous through the air. In contrast, Dan Reeves has yet to learn of the invention of the forward pass and was usually happy to run the undersized Warrick Dunn straight into the line on 3rd-and-5. The improved play-calling alone will give Price many more opportunities to contribute. Randy Moss he is not, but there's plenty of reasons to think Price will bounce back and at least come close to his 2002 totals and that would project him as a rock solid #2 fantasy WR. The Atlanta Falcons have promise, but there are enough question marks against Price that make him a player to avoid on draft day. First, the Falcons are no longer coached by Dan Reeves. That is a good thing, but Jim Mora will need time to develop this offense. There will be growing pains as Vick gets a handle on the West Coast offense. Mora has no head coaching experience, so his effectiveness must be questioned.
Price has also yet to prove he is a number one reciever by himself. Certainly, he displayed the skills in Buffalo, but that was opposite Eric Moulds. He has Michael Jenkins to give him support, but he is untested and unproven. Price will be drawing alot of double coverage unless Jenkins shows he is a factor. Finally, we have the lack of depth at the Atlanta quarterback position. Detmer is not much of an improvement over Doug Johnson and Kurt Kittner. If Vick goes down, the Falcons are once again in trouble. -- i am walrus |

quote: I agree that players take time to adapt to the West Coast offense, but I think in the case of the Falcons the offense is Vick's arm and his improvision and that won't change much. If anything, the new offense will just put his receivers in better positions to make plays. I don't share the concern about Jim Mora because he brought over Gregg Knapp to run the offense. Mora will put his stamp on the defense and will have to learn the things that are new to him like clock and game management, but Knapp has total control of the offense and plenty of experience running a successful one. quote: Having suffered through too many games with Doug Johnson and Kurt Kittner last year, I have to respectively disagree. Those two guys played as poorly as I can imagine quarterbacks playing. Detmer is no Michael Vick, but I think he's a definite upgrade. |

I guess the question with this and all these "Is he valuable" posts really boils down to your definition of valuable. Most, if not all, of the players mentioned in these debates are top notch-or perceived top notch players at their respective positions. (Or at one time where) I assume we are arguing if they are going to go back to what they have done in the past or are they going the way of the Carl Pickens of the world.
Valuable to me means draftable in the first 5 rounds in the case of these debates for WR. With regards to RB's its RD 1 and QB's I guess round 3. To me, valuable players are picked because you think they are good and you want them on your team. In the Survivor League, somebody picked D. Davis in round 1 before Taylor, Dillon and others. Obviously he thought of Davis as valuable and chose to take him. There is a distinct difference IMO between valuable and/or value at this position. When it gets to round 7 and you still see a WR on the board like Amani Toomer I would say that player has value at that time but that doesn't necessarily make him a valuable fantasy receiver. Hence, with the case in point, Peerless Price, I do not think he is a valuable WR because I wouldn't draft him in the first 5 rds. Heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences. |
