This is spawned off of the whole Jeter debate. Give me your best by position.

Catcher

Mike Matheny. Not just the best catcher now, but the best defensive catcher I have personally ever seen. Shows perfect form blocking balls, well above average at throwing runners out, and commands his pitching staff. I have seen alot of the best, but I really don't think there is anybody in his class defensively.

1B

Derrick Lee. Never misses picking balls out of the dirt. His height and agility really give him an advantage covering the line. the best I have seen is Keith Hernandez, Lee is the best I have seen in the last decade.

2B

Mark Grudzielanek. There are some guys with more range, but has an absolute canon for an arm at second and simply turns the best double play of any second baseman. Before him Roberto Alomar was the easy pick.

3B

Scott Rolen. Simply put, the best defensive third baseman ever. I have had the opportunity to watch Brooks Robinson on some old films of my dad, and he was great, but he does not make the plays that Rolen can make. I kow all positions are different, but if someone asked me who was the best defensive player I have ever seen it would be Scott Rolen.

SS

Jack Wilson. This was pretty tough. I just think Wilson has the best mix of range, which is as good as anyone's, arm strength and ability to make the hard play look routine.

LF

Manny . No really, Carl Crawford. This is easily the weakest of the defensive positions. Crawford has the speed and range of a center fielder and a pretty accurate arm.

CF

Tori Hunter. 2 years ago I still would have said Edmonds and Andruw Jones were both better. Edmonds body finally looks like it is breaking down after a decade of throwing it all over the field and walls. Jones is still an incredible CF but every once in awhile has that brain freeze on where to throw. Hunter brings the circus catches, the speed and range and a decent enough arm to keep runners honest. I would not argue someone saying Jones was better though, he just glides out in center.

RF

Ichiro. No brainer. Great range and glove and a cannon for an arm. There are some other good ones, but he is the best.

Does anybody really care about pitchers.
