I just got Fifa '08 for the PC and am trying to run it on windows XP but keep getting

d:\autorun.exe is not a valid Win32 application

The box says the game is compatible with windows xp. I searched on google and tried to run the program using start>programs>accessories>program compatability wizard, but no luck so I figured I'd try here. I've also read about disabling autorun and clicking setup.exe but when I open the D drive the autorun icon is the only icon I see so I don't know if thats possible.

Do I need to just return the game or is there some way to get it to work?

This can be a pretty generic error... More often than not, it is a corrupted file. It is possible you're dealing with a disc that was not recorded properly. I find it highly suspect that it is the ONLY file on the disk. To confirm if that is the case, you will want to unhide files. In any explorer window, go to the Tools menu and select Folder Options. On the View tab, change the radio button to read "Show hidden files and folders". Personally, I unhide the next two but I don't think that those will matter to you. Now take a look at the disk and see if you can access other files.

I'd try in another PC just to see if it launches before bringing it back.

Others things to check are disabling any virus software and lower your IE security, especially if you have IE7.

Last night I tried to install the disc onto another laptop, also with Windows XP, and was able to do so. However when I tried to load the game I got a black screen as if the game was trying to load, but the game never came and I couldn't get out of the black screen.

I tried to copy the EA folder I installed onto the 2nd laptop onto an external harddrive and run it on the original laptop with the original CD inside but get a

FIFA {0} is not installed correctly. Please reinstall.

I'll try it on my desktop later and if no luck I'm taking it back.

Maybe go to the EA website and see if this is a typical problem. Maybe there is a patch you can download? I've got a couple of printers that are 8-10 years old. With each new PC I've gotten with a new OS, the software doesn't run properly and I need to download these patches for them to work. But yours is brand new software, so you'd think you wouldn't have to do that. Then again, we bought my daughter an MP3 player that was XP compatible that we can't get going either. The whole industry is getting too far ahead of itself too fast.

The problem is most companies just don't test their products enough.

Sounds like the other laptop doesn't have a supported video card or maybe missing 3D support. Looks like the media is fine and the problem is probably in the setup on your other PC.
You defiantly won't be able to run it by just copying the folder over. You'll have to get through the install process.

Try launching the setup.exe from the run dialog or see if you can see it via a command prompt.

START>RUN "e:\setup.exe"
-----
Or START>RUN "cmd"
d:
dir

Tell me what files are listed with that command.

fyi I am able to install and play the game on the desktop (Vista), so it's not a bad disc or anything.

sportz I'll try your advice later and let you know what I find...
