Evidently Matt Walsh has agreed to turn over all tapes and documents to the NFL by May 8th and meet with league officials on May 13th in exchange for full legal protection. So it looks like there's finally going to be an end to this mess.

PATS ADDRESS WALSH AGREEMENT
Posted by Mike Florio on April 23, 2008, 4:39 p.m. The New England Patriots have issued a statement regarding the news that Matt Walsh will meet with Commissioner Roger Goodell next month in New York. In our view, the statement oozes with the frustration that the Pats have been experiencing since Walsh’s name hit the national radar screen two days before Super Bowl XLII. It’s also clear that the Patriots are prepared to disagree with anything that Walsh has to say. Here’s the full text: “The New England Patriots are pleased to learn that Matt Walsh is finally willing to come forward to meet with the NFL. We are eagerly anticipating his honest disclosures to Commissioner Goodell next month and the return of all the materials he took during his time of employment. We fully expect this meeting to conclude the league’s investigation into a damaging and false allegation that was originally levied against the team on the day before this year’s Super Bowl. “It is important to note that there has never been a confidentiality agreement restricting Matt Walsh and no legal protections were ever necessary for him to speak to the NFL, to media outlets or to anyone else regarding his employment with the Patriots. He demanded to be released from responsibility for his statements, and after a frustrating and lengthy negotiation period, a settlement has finally been reached. Walsh has been granted a significant number of privileges through this agreement, none of which the Patriots or the NFL were obligated to give. “At all times, we cooperated fully with the league’s investigation and stand by our initial public statement from Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008: ‘The suggestion that the New England Patriots recorded the St. Louis Rams’ walkthrough on the day before Super Bowl XXXVI in 2002 is absolutely false.’ “The Patriots’ organizational focus at this time is on the NFL Draft and preparing for what we hope will be an exciting 2008 season. We will have no further comments regarding Matt Walsh at this time.” Clearly, the Pats believe that Walsh was the source for the February 2 item in the Boston Herald alleging that the Rams’ practice was videotaped. Though the Herald surely won’t comment on whether Walsh was the source, it’ll be very interesting to see what Walsh has to say about whether he said anything to the Herald along these lines. The more we think about it, the Pats might want to consider playing nice with Walsh. In the end, he could be their star witness in the defamation lawsuit filed against the Herald. ************************************************ Depending on what Walsh really has it could be just the beginning not the end. |

Funny how NE is already making excuses.
The only problem here is Goodell wants to sweep this under the rug as much as NE. He proved that by destroying the tapes NE already gave them. I don't understand why a third party isn't involved to keep a close eye on Goodell also. Belicheck will soon be in the same boat as Clemens. |

I agree with every one of these points. There is no way Goodell and the NFL should be the only one seeing these tapes. Goodell has been wanting to get this story put to bed since it began, and now he will be in charge of seeing it. Smells, smells real bad. **************************** Official Fantasy Insights fan of the 2006 World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. |

Walsh hands over tapes
Surprise, surprise...no Rams walk-through. He turned over all the stuff that the Pats have already admitted to. Fascinating. |

From what I had been hearing, there was no factual basis for the original claim. As usual, the media has a greater interest in breaking a story than it does about confirming the facts and sources. ---------- Why do we trust the same people to tell us about global warming that can't get the weather right for this coming weekend? |

Despite all the "what ifs" I talked about before, and I think they were viable scenarios at the time, this certainly sounds like nothing more than what the Pats already admitted too. To tell the truth I'm glad it's nothing more than that.
Walsh tried to play big man and now will look like an idiot. Of course, there is the possibility that he got paid to not hand over certain items. Hey, it's possible. |

Heh, not only is it possible, I guarantee a few members here will be certain that occurred. Always the conspiracy, always the coverup. Of course, this viewpoint will be considered naive. Oh well. |

Agreed, although I don't believe it. Walsh looks like a fool this way. He would a much bigger sway if he had something worth giving. The thing that will hold most people up is that he had nothing so why did he want this guarantee from the NFL? Easy, he didn't want to give up the nothing he had after shooting his mouth off.

Or he got paid off to make this go away! |

He needed the guarantee because those tapes are stolen property. He had no business keeping those and speaks to his credibility that he would steal something like this back in 2002 even before all the Pat's recent success. To some he's been "hiding something big", but to me, he's been out looking for attention and money from the start. Why else would he keep these tapes back from 2002 when he was fired only to bring them to light 5 yrs later? Think he just enjoyed watching them with his family on Saturday nights? His plan was ruined when the Pats admitted to this taping dating all the way back to when Belichick was first hired. He would have been better served coming forward sooner before the Jet's game. Oops. |

Technically I guess the tapes themselves were stolen propety. He had no confidentiality agreement with the Pats so a couple of stolen tapes wouldn't be worth much as far as a fine goes. It's barely petty theft. So that theory really doesn't fly any better than an ostrich. |

Its probably a mixture of all these things... He probably wanted some CYA in case the Pats ever tried to make him the fall guy. He probably wanted some blackmail leverage against the Pats if he ever had an angle become available. He probably thought there was a chance he might be able to grab the spotlight and hit a big payday as a whistle-blower or tell-all sometime down the road. As for the indemnification clause... The guy is a golf-pro. He may make decent money, but he doesn't have NFL owner money. Even if he didn't sign a confidentiality agreement, that doesn't mean he won't get sued for slander if he runs his mouth. He needed the NFL pocket book to pay for attorneys if the Pats came after him. Getting sued and winning often isn't much cheaper than getting sued and losing. __________________________ 10 Team Dynasty Auction League 53 man rosters 7 IOP starters (1QB+2RB+2WR+1TE+1K) performance scoring 11 IDP starters (3DL+3LB+2CB+2S+1flex) performance scoring Current Roster QB's:T.Brady/J.Garcia/J.Beck/K.Kolb/M.Cassell RB's:B.Westbrook/R.Grant/E.Graham/D.Williams/S.Young/K.Jones/R.Torain/L.Jordan/B.Jackson/D.Ward/T.Bell WR's:P.Burress/K.Curtis/M.Clayton/D.Bennett/D.Driver/L.Robinson/J.Gaffney TE:Z.Miller/J.Carlson/J.Putzier K:M.Crosby/B.Coutou/S.Suisham DL:C.Grant/L.Little/K.Gregg/T.Kelly/J.Moss/P.Merling LB:R.Lewis/B.Ruud/B.James/W.Witherspoon/C.Lofton/O.Gaither/A.Pierce/D.Connor/P.Lenon CB:T.McGee/L.McKelvin/E.Hobbs/C.Woodson S:M.Lewis/M.McCree/C.C.Brown/R.Williams |

Just man up and say what you mean Gian. I'll pull one of your original trix and "Correct this" for you.
First off, 8 tapes were turned over, that's it. Is that all Walsh has? who knows, but it doesn't really matter. Anyone who thinks those are the only games that they cheated, including the Jets last year It's quite fishy that Goodell "made a deal" with Walsh for the tapes (The guy who mysteriously destroyed all the previous evidence) yet the details of that deal are nowhere to be found. How about the 2002 AFC championship game (NE 24, Pitt 17)? Isn't cheating in that as equally important as in the SB? Apparently not to Goodell. Why does Goodell only care about the Rams game? is it because he knows that it wouldn't be produced anymore after making a deal with Walsh? The fact that Walsh only turned over exactly what they already knew is very odd. If all he had was the same info they knew he would not of been concerned about making a deal. It got this far for a reason. Walsh never had anything to gain from this. Fame for turning over evidence that everyone already knew about? Ya, that's a brilliant plan to get rich and famous on. There is far more to what NE did and what Walsh knows. We most likely will never know now. But to think all these people involved for all the events that went on from leaking the story, Walsh keeping quite, Goodell destroying tapes, unpublished deals being made, no third party involvement, the lawyers, the length of this whold process etc... tells a much larger story than what Goodell wants anyonen to know. It also make sense for Goodell to play out this way. He risks tarnishing years of the NFL and looking the like the NBA. And that translates into alot of $$$$$. |

I'm going to refrain from making any more comments as I fully expect this to turn into a Barry Bonds scenario. If this was not a wide-spread practice, other teams, coaches, etc. would be more vocal about it. One kid got caught with his hand in the cookie jar, but there are going to be crumbs on a lot of faces.

This debate would of been pretty easy to predict without anyone saying anything.
Gian has taken what's written in the press as gospel and has closed the book. Of course I'll read between the lines and take the conspiracy side. Rav goes with the most politically correct take. And skip goes with the "everyones done it so who cares" theory. |

I think you have only caught half my point. I believe that your argument (and that of many others) would be that there is no way the Patriots would have been so good without cheating. And my argument is that if what I believe will come to light is true that there was a ton of cheating across the league so it would be impossible to determine who gained any advantage. In my opinion, it's no different than the steroids issue in baseball. It took years for enough to come to light there that no longer was Bonds the lone focus. This issue came up less than a year ago. Its too premature to jump on the wagon. Is a lot of this trying to be buried for the sake of the sport? Most likely yes. Because I think there is fear of so much more coming out that would end up tarnishing the game. Believe me, I doubt there is anyone on this board more likely to be called a conspiracy theorist than me. And I think that a terrible moniker anyway, because its applied with a very broad brush. I just don't see how we could be possibly led to believe there was 1 team out of 32 involved. That's my conspiracy theory. ---------- Why do we trust the same people to tell us about global warming that can't get the weather right for this coming weekend? |

Couldn't be any further from the truth. In fact, when this all broke, I was the one that DID NOT believe what was written in the press and I still don't. There's already conflicting reports about what's on the tapes and what Goodell said and didn't say. I don't think we'll ever know the full extent of it but I also don't choose to be convinced that the worst took place without any proof. Until there's any new real evidence, I think we're right where we were months ago when punishment was fist dished out. |
