Davis' rookie campaign was hampered by injuries. He was healthy the majority of last season and put up some decent numbers, but probably not yet up to the expectations that many have for him.
#6 Vernon Davis. What can we expect for 2008? ---------- Why do we trust the same people to tell us about global warming that can't get the weather right for this coming weekend? |

Davis, IMO, is one of those talents that comes around rarely. I believe the sky is the limit for his talent. If talent were all there was to figure out this would be much easier. Davis has spent a season hobbled by injuries so we must consider that. The 49ers just aren't that good right now. If they can find or develop a QB Davis' numbers will probably improve.
For this year I would expect a slight improvement. His future value can only be determined by each person but I would love to have that potential in my stable in a dynasty league. |

With no one of quality to throw him the rock, not even a Mike Martz offense can make him a premier fantasy TE. Damn shame too because he's got more talent than Antonio Gates.

He may have talent, but I wouldn't go that far. Gates is an amazing talent and not even Davis and his combine #'s are better. He needs to catch better first.... |

For what its worth, in my season of Madden '08, Davis racked up 1600 yards and 18 touchdowns.
Seriously, though, Davis obviously has the talent. He's definitely worth taking a flier on after guys like Gates, Gonzo, Winslow, Clark, Witten, and maybe Heap or Crumpler are off the board. -- i am walrus |

In a redraft I'd take Davis ahead of 3 of those you have listed. In a dynasty it would be 4. Of course in a redraft I'd wait a get a decent TE at a much greater value. |

Out of curiousity, what 3 would you take Davis over this year in a redraft? The only one I'd even consider would be Crumpler. I suspsect you will say Gonzo and Heap because of their QB situation, but gonzo was SUPPOSED to stink it up with the Qb situation last year too.... (and Vernon's QB situation is just as bad....) 1.Crumpler-he's in a great situation but until he capitalizes on it I'd take Davis.
2.Winslow-He has great talent. I just think his knees are toast. He hasn't been in OTAs because he is rehabbing his knees. 3.Heap-I realize Cam is there and everyone expects bigger and better things at the TE position and I'm probably wrong but I'd take Davis depending on my situation at other positions. |

We're pretty much in agreement, then. Crumpler and Heap are "maybe" in my book, in that I can see a case for them going ahead of Davis. Primarily that those guys have done it before in less than ideal situations, and Davis' supporting cast is about on par with the two of them. If I had to rank them for a redraft, I'd probably go Heap, Davis, Crumpler. Dynasty wise, I move him ahead of both for sure.
Winslow is another story, though. I've got my concerns with his knees, sure, but he's fought through them in the past to put up great numbers. With his upside, I'd take the risk on him. -- i am walrus |

If we're talking a redraft league, not only would I take Davis behind nearly everyone listed, but I have a couple of others I would probably take ahead of him. Missing are the likes of Cooley, Scheffler, Shockey and Daniels. The only one I would be teetering on is Crumpler.
I have Winslow in FIDO and share similar concerns about his knees over the long term. But in a redraft league, there is no one I would rather have than him, Witten, or Gates. If Winslow stays on the field for 16 games this season, 100 receptions is within reach. I give zero chance to Davis doing that at any point in his career. Davis may very well be talented, but there are plenty of talented players who never lived up to expectations. And I don't think he will either. He'll be fine as a starting option, but there are a lot of receiving TEs in the league right now and I'd take my chances on most of these others first. ---------- Why do we trust the same people to tell us about global warming that can't get the weather right for this coming weekend? |

I'll take Winslow for 12 games this year over Davis for 16.

Yeah, I forgot about those guys when I made my list. I'd definitely take Cooley and Shockey ahead of Davis, but I think its a tossup between Daniels, Scheffler, and Davis. -- i am walrus |
